House for Louise

Modern House on the Prairie

This Neo-Farmhouse is situated in the vast cornfields of Central Illinois adjacent to a family business, orchards, and ongoing prairie restoration.

The client wished to capitalize on the expansive and endless flatland views, while retaining privacy from the nearby family microbrewery.   Large window openings frame the landscape and blur the transition from inside to outside.  Natural materials are used throughout the house creating a warm environment.

Architectural cues are taken from the surrounding agricultural vernacular, and large vaulted spaces create the main body of the house.  There are no attics in this home – the entire volume is retained and celebrated.  The prow of the house cuts into the corn and beans with a porch for viewing sunsets, with the sunroom, two sided fireplace, living, dining, and kitchen beyond as one large open space.  The bedroom wing houses master and guest bedrooms, the upstairs contains a loft and bunkroom for family children, and the basement contains more sleeping areas and a rec room.  Built ins, shelving, storage, and windows seats are incorporated throughout as part of the architecture.

The house becomes a serene viewing platform for watching the changing landscape throughout the year — from the green and lush summer growing season to the stark white beauty of winter.
